DLP Week 23

Happy June-ly  (I'm still part in June and part in July!)... Seems like I really got behind on June's DLP pages.  The theme for June is Travel Journal.

I feel like this page spread is more scrapbook than mixed media layers!  As with every month, I started out by deciding what kind of calendar to make.  I printed out a calendar off the internet, but only used the days of the week part.  I did use the rest of the calendar as a guide for where the weeks would be laid out.

I used an oval punch to punch out ovals from a map, then glued those to the June calendar, stamping the numbered days on them.  On both left and right sides, I used papers from the book Make Map Art.  I got it some time ago during a map-crazy phase.  It has several papers for making your own maps, plus stickers and a how-to book.
The Challenge for the week was Illustrative Art Journaling.  I wasn't feeling very illustrative, and instead, I printed out images from google earth of places that mean something to me.  (I am not traveling anywhere this month, but when I think of traveling, I think of going back home since I don't seem to get there much lately!)
I filled in some of the other shapes on the preprinted page with writing and parts from maps.
I am currently working on the next assignment, which has turned into one spread for the rest of June.  I seemed to have the same ideas for the assignments for the other three weeks in June, so it will be one big spread and will also get me caught up in a hurry.  I added an extra page as a fold-out for the three weeks to be combined.  Hope to have it ready to post sooner rather than later!

Ancient Map

I keep looking at the maps in the Timothy Ely book, and something kept nagging at my brain from ancient times (you know, 1999).  I pulled out one of my journals from back then, and saw it was as I remembered - I did try to draw a map in my journal, which represented my life at the time.  I think I might have even had Ely's book in front of me back then for inspiration.

I was not pleased with my drawing back then, but it doesn't look too bad to me right now.  Hard to believe so much time has passed.

Like anything else, practice makes perfect.  So if I want to get better at it, I guess I should practice more!

Mapping Adventures

I am still working in my "physics journal" (which has nothing to do with physics other than that I used the cover of a physics book to make the journal).

I knew when I started it that I wanted a fold-out map in it. And I knew that it would not be to scale or be accurate like a real map, but rather a representation of places I've gone this year. I know from reading Jill Berry's book Personal Geographies, that I can take liberties like that. So, if I go to Gaye's house twelve times this year, there will be twelve "roads" showing that. Yes, I'll take liberties like that, making duplicate roads.

My problem is, I know what I want it to look like in the end.  I just don't want to put down too much permanently in the beginning.  I may have to "map it out" in pencil for now and make everything permanent in the end.  (If you can't follow my train of thought here, that's okay.  Sometimes I have that problem too!)

I think I am distracted by some wedding maps I saw on line.  I am blown away by them.  They are here, and that is sorta kinda what I want my travel map to look like eventually.
